Mary Murphy of Schull, Co. Cork, Ireland, graced us with her presence and her brown bread recipe. Enough of us have enjoyed it over the years that we all wanted to learn how to make it from the expert herself.
Here are the ingredients — she swears that olive oil is what she uses, even at home.

And here is how much sugar goes in — Mary measures everything by hand

This movie shows how wet to make the dough — pretty wet!
And how to put it in the pan
Below is the actual recipe — bake at 350 for 60-70 minutes.

And the proud baker herself! Thank you Mary!!

(movies still to come — YouTube is down at the moment)
It was a fabulous night in Acton – a wonderful meal with family. Leo and Sophie made rockets for Finn and his brother and we got the budding cook a chef’s outfit and 4 boxes of noodles. At least for a while, no one can tell him there aren’t any more noodles!

We got to visit with Elizabeth Everson & Kellan from Iowa this weekend; meet Baby, the new pig, at the barn; and visit the maple sugaring operation at the Ipswich River Audubon.

Sophie loves the new pig -- just check her FB profile photo!

"hmm, I detect some floral notes" "definitely"

Pure joy! Finn loves the maple syrup!

...two wee varmits emerged from the bath on their own, soaking wet! We later discovered that while we weren't paying attention, they moved most of the books from S&K's bedroom to a huge pile in Leo's room. So much for playing nicely on their own!

Leo finally got to hold Donncha

Admittedly, my nephew was happy before he got stripped for his bath. But like most infants (he is one month old), he doesn’t like to be naked and doesn’t like “normal” baths. A lot of babies hate the bath and why wouldn’t they? It’s cold and miserable. But look at how blissed out Denny becomes when he gets into the Tummy Tub. He goes from crying to calm to literally asleep in just a couple of minutes. The idea behind the tub is that it mimics the womb. This tub has been through four kids (Henry, Sylvie, Leo, Finn) and now it’s Denny’s turn.
If you want one, don’t order the silly pink or blue stand they sell with them — totally unnecessary. They are kind of hard to find in stock, but this store seems to have them.
And a reader told me there’s a similar product called a washPOD that you can get for half the price — definitely worth a try.
